Burwell Lode Bridge Project

Learn more about the project to construct a new bridge over Burwell Lode.
The National Trust are working with Cambridgeshire County Council to fund and construct an accessible bridge over Burwell Lode along the Lodes Way cycle path (National Route 11).
This will improve access for pedestrians, wheelchair users, pushchairs and cyclists, who will be able to explore further into the UK’s most recorded-species-rich landscape.
The current bridge is deteriorating and difficult for cyclists to use due to its steep steps.
The new bridge will have a gradual incline that cyclists, wheelchairs and pushchairs will be able to comfortably navigate. Cambridgeshire County Council hope to have the new bridge completed in 2026.
Like the current bridge, it will provide a superb viewpoint across Burwell and Adventurers’ Fens for birdwatching and wildlife viewing. The current structure will remain in place until the new one is completed to maintain access over Burwell Lode throughout the construction period.
Wicken Fen nature reserve is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Special Area of Conservation and a Ramsar site, with international recognition of its ability to take action against climate change.
In 1999, the Wider Wicken Fen Vision was launched, an innovative and forward-thinking 100-year plan to increase the nature reserve around Wicken Fen and create a diverse landscape that extends towards Cambridge, over an area of 53 square kilometres.
The Vision has three simple aims: more space for nature, secure carbon and improve access. This new crossing supports that work, enabling everyone to enjoy access and recreation opportunities across this beautiful and tranquil wilderness.
Funding and construction for the new accessible crossing is from Cambridgeshire County Council.
