Closure of Giant's Castle Bridge

We have had to take the difficult decision to permanently close Giant’s Castle footbridge in the Western Woods. From Monday 16 June you will no longer be able to cross the bridge.

Recent inspections have revealed significant deterioration in the structure, and the safety of our visitors must always come first.Over the years, we’ve made sustained efforts to maintain and monitor the bridge to keep it open for everyone to enjoy. However, the latest assessments and monitoring data have shown that the glulam structure has deteriorated to a point where it now poses an unacceptable safety risk and is beyond reasonable repair. Expert advice has confirmed that, without the possibility of replacement, the bridge must be closed.

We commissioned structural engineers to carry out a feasibility study exploring two options: first, to remove and replace the existing bridge; and second, to remove it and identify a suitable location for a new crossing. Unfortunately, the area presents significant challenges, including dense woodland, a complex network of paths, and the fast-flowing River Bollin – all of which limit what is practically and safely achievable.

Regrettably, the feasibility work confirms that a project of this scale would cost more than £1 million to complete – funds that we do not have available at this time. The costs of removing the existing bridge, building or relocating a new structure and replacing the adjoining steps, all within a location that is largely inaccessible for vehicles and equipment, means that there is no straightforward solution.

We understand this news is disappointing, and we want to reassure our visitors that this decision has not been made lightly. We remain committed to ensuring access to green spaces and have waymarked two alternative walking routes across the estate which are now on our website, to continue offering opportunities to explore and enjoy the landscape.
