Parachutes and Evacuations: A World War Two Legacy Walk

Explore Tatton Park's pivotal role in World War Two on this immersive walking tour.

  • Booking essential
  • Admission applies

During World War Two, Tatton was a key training ground for paratroopers. At the time, the estate was owned by Maurice Egerton (the 4th and last Baron), who himself was a keen aviator and friend of the pioneers of flight, the Wright Brothers. Maurice gladly offered up the grounds as a landing ground for the paratroopers. The site was also a location that children were evacuated to for safety from urban areas.

In this special guided walk, you will explore the wartime significance of the estate in more detail and visit areas of importance within that story. The event will culminate with a visit to Tatton Park’s World War Two memorial, which stands “in honour of those thousands from many lands who descended here in the course of training given or received for parachute service with the Allied Forces in every theatre of war." Please note that this is an outdoor event, which will involve walking across undulating areas of the parkland. Appropriate outdoor wear and dressing appropriately for the weather is essential.

This event is intended for adults with history experience days for young people available in school holidays.
