50 Winters at Penrose Lecture
Discover how Penrose has changed over 50 years while in the care of the National Trust. David Davies, who has worked on the estate for 49 years, will take you through the progress and challenges faced during the past half a century.

David Davies will first take you through how the National Trust took on the care of Penrose in 1974 with a background to the estate through the time of both the Penrose and Rogers families. He will then look at the Cober, the Loe, Loe Bar, the estate, Gunwalloe and Porkellis, and the physical and social changes that he has witnessed over his 49 years of involvement with Penrose and as a founder member of the Loe Pool Forum.
David Davies, was Head of Geography at Helston School for 23 years, Head of Geography at Truro College for 10 years and taught in International Schools in Western Australia, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka and Bahrain, teaching an incredible 34,000 lessons to several thousand students. David was the secondary school representative with the National Trust, and wrote several textbooks for Cambridge A-Level and GCSE courses and A-Level GeoFactsheets on Coastal Defences and Climate Change in Mounts Bay as well as Global Irrigation Techniques. He has travelled to every continent, except Antarctica, to over 70 countries and swum in every ocean. In addition to this stellar career, David is a member of the Royal Geological Society of Cornwall, Cornwall Archaeological Society, as well as being a life member and on the committee of Halston Rugby Club, and other local steering groups and societies. In his spare time, David volunteers with the National Trust at Penrose.
The Cafe will stay open late providing hot drinks, mulled wine and complementary mini minced pies.

The Stables Cafe at Penrose. If you would like to use the cafe before the lecture, we suggest arriving at 2.30pm, as the lecture starts at 3pm. Closest parking is Penrose Hill car park.
- What to bring and wear
Wrap up warm and we suggest bringing a torch, as it will be dark once the lecture has finished.
