Heritage Open Days: Branscombe
Walking tour of historical village.
- Booking essential
Starting at the beach, the tour group will be taken back in time to look at the history of this unique and picturesque village. Expect tales of smuggling, struggling and the odd ghost. The route will head inland, taking in some highlights of the surrounding landscape, as well as giving an account of the village in its commercial heyday, looking at buildings that once housed general stores, carpenters and coffin makers, butchers and slaughter yards, and even a munitions factory. The walk will then arrive at Manor Mill, where a 20-minute tour of the premises will follow, complete with milling demonstration by guides in Victorian costume. Then it's across pastureland and through an orchard to the Old Bakery, where the walk will finish.
Make a day of it as the Old Bakery will be open for teas, cakes and scones. Or pop in to Manor Mill any time between 12.30 and 4pm for an extra shot of history.
