Creating Coleton Fishacre: photographic exhibition

We’re delving into the archives to when Coleton Fishacre was created 100 years ago. From the moment the family fell in love with the South Devon coastline to seeing their dream country home finished, we invite you to celebrate it’s centenary.

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event (admission applies)

Rupert D'Oyly Carte and his wife Lady Dorothy were sailing post the South Devon coast and spotted Pudcombe Cove, a private beach at the bottom of a secluded valley. What a perfect spot to indulge and enjoy their outdoor lifestyles, away from the city.

Employing architect Oswald Milne, the family brought their dream to life, creating a house that sat in harmony with its location, and documented the entire build with their own camera.

To celebrate 100 years of its creation, we're showcasing the family’s personal photo album in a brand-new photographic exhibition, sharing archive images not seen before.

The exhibition documents the building of Coleton Fishacre through the eyes of its creators and highlights significant moments from the changing world around them. There'll be the chance to get hands on with a range of vintage cameras and discover more about the architect that brought their dreams to life.

Taking place inside the house and out in the garden, the pop-up exhibition will be on display from 3 May to 2 November 2025.
