SEND students gain award-winning work experience

Students from a special educational needs and disabilities school in Newbury have been given an employment boost, thanks to award-winning work experience at Sandham Memorial Chapel.

The Castle School students worked alongside the Chapel’s gardening team in 27 weekly sessions, learning how to carefully maintain the orchard and garden. They enjoyed trimming trees, clearing leaves, making compost, picking apples, weeding flowerbeds, sowing seeds and planting bulbs.

The work experience is part of the ‘World of Work’ programme run annually by The Castle School, which aims to build employment skills and boost opportunities for professional development.

At a recent presentation held at the school, the National Trust was awarded for its role in this initiative. This is the fifth year that the Trust has been involved with the scheme which began in 2014.

As well as gaining essential gardening know-how, the students also spent time chatting with staff and volunteers, honing much sought-after soft skills.

“This partnership not only helps students build practical skills but it also boosts their confidence, which can have a potentially life-changing impact on their future,” said a representative from The Castle School. “The team at Sandham Memorial Chapel have been exceptionally warm and supportive and always make us feel incredibly welcome. Our students have really thrived in this fun and inclusive environment; we genuinely enjoy collaborating with the National Trust!”

The team at Sandham Memorial Chapel commented: “We were delighted to receive this award. To be recognised for doing something we get so much pleasure from was humbling and rewarding.”

The ‘World of Work’ programme is an intrinsic part of The Castle School curriculum, offering students a tangible employment 'leg-up' and aiming to foster positive relationships within the community.
