Winter Walk with Winston

Wrap up warm and take a stroll around the garden to explore photographic displays of the Churchill family at Chartwell during the Great Snow of 1927.

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event (admission applies)

The Christmas Blizzard of 1927 was one of the heaviest snowfalls recorded in Britain in the twentieth century. Up to 25 feet of snow fell in parts of southern and southeastern England with large snowdrifts cutting off towns and villages from access by road and rail. Historical records from the time depict extraordinary scenes of snow-buried locomotives and London commuters on skis. The snow cover lasted until the New Year.

At Chartwell, the snow transformed the garden and estate into a winter wonderland. The Churchill family and their guests made the most of the freezing temperatures and snowy conditions, and fortunately for us, took marvellous photographs of their adventures.

Our photographic display in the garden shares these winter wonders with our visitors and includes images never-before-displayed at Chartwell.

The displays have been curated by Katherine Carter, Chartwell Property Curator.

Images used in the Winter Walk with Winston are reproduced by permission of Curtis Brown, London, on behalf of the Broadwater Collection. The Broadwater Collection is a series of Churchill family albums held at the Churchill Archives Centre, Churchill College, Cambridge.
