Lacemaking Demonstrations at South Foreland Lighthouse
Ever wondered how fine lace was made? Well, now is your chance to find out. As part of the Lace Guild's Golden Anniversary, Cantium Lacemakers will be running demonstrations throughout the two-day event. See how it's done - and try for yourself.
- Booking not needed
- Free event (admission applies)
This year marks the Golden Anniversary of the Lace Guild, and South Foreland Lighthouse is delighted to be a part of their celebrations. For two days, Cantium Lacemakers—a local bobbin lacemaking group—will be giving demonstrations of this centuries-old traditional craft that has now largely been replaced by machinery. So much so that hand bobbin lacemaking is now classed as an endangered craft. You'll have the opportunity to watch skilled makers at work, learn about the history of lace and discover how this intricate craft is being kept alive today. Come and join the friendly group of lacemakers in the Marconi Hut - they'll be delighted to share their skills with you, and, if you wish, they'll invite you to try lacemaking yourself on their special practice pillows—with full instructions, of course! This is a relaxing craft, based on easy-to-follow principles, and whether you are 9 or 90, you too could become one of tomorrow's lacemakers.
