World Ranger Day - Be a Ranger for the Morning (for families)

Join a short, free, guided walk with our friendly Ecologist/Ranger, Mel, searching for bugs. Hear how we care for chalk meadow plants and animals, and collect litter as we go.

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event (admission applies)

To celebrate World Ranger Day, why not bring the family and be Rangers for the morning? We'll take a gentle walk through the chalk downland searching for bugs, animals and plants. Our friendly ecologist, Mel, will help you to identify them and will tell you more about them. She will explain in simple terms how our work in the countryside helps to maintain the delicate balances that allow the multitude of living organisms to thrive. You'll also get to make your very own free Ranger badge to take home with you. We won't be going near the cliff edge or steep slopes. Part of our Summer of Play programme. Summer of Play is sponsored by Starling Bank.

The basics

Suitability

Supervised children are welcome

Meeting point

Meet outside Edith's Bookshop, close to the visitor centre at the start time.

What to bring and wear

We'll be walking through the countryside on informal paths to ensure we don't disturb the nesting birds. We suggest wearing closed-toed stout shoes or walking boots with socks and trousers.

Accessibility

Some of the paths we'll be using will be unsurfaced and may be uneven. The event may not be suited to wheelchair or mobility scooter users. If you have limited mobility, please call the contact number for advice.

Other

The event is free to attend. Normal parking charges apply; National Trust members can park for free. Toilets are available at the visitor centre - as we will be in the countryside, we suggest using the facilities before setting out. Please dress appropriately for the weather, which can change suddenly. The grass may be wet from overnight dew/rain. You may wish to bring a drink and a light snack. Please take your waste home with you. If it is raining or very windy, the event will not go ahead. If the weather forecast is bad, please check our website or Facebook page before travelling.
