Walk the ancient Woodlands of Wetheral. Journey back to the Medieval Period and beyond.
Situated on the bank of River Eden are three rock cut chambers of 14th century in date. The caves are called St.Constantine's Cell and known locally as Wetheral Safeguard. They were used as a place for concealment or safety, particularly during the Scottish incursions. But questions remain...
Did the Romans in-fact make them when quarrying the local sandstone? What of the Polissar, the "Polishing Block" block nearby, did Stone Age Man sharpen spear and axe here 6000 years ago?
