In Georgian England, the wealthy toured Britain on holiday, visiting stately homes and gardens, and Gibside was a popular destination for visitors to be astounded by.
The naturalistic design of Gibside moved away from formal layouts, offering meandering paths that reveal views, amphitheatres and architecture, to surprise the wanderer on their journey. Inspired from a design by Stephen Switzer, Gibside is an early expression of the natural movement.
Walk through the footsteps of those who toured the gardens of England and learn why Gibside was a fashionable garden.
The tour will last around 90 minutes.
