The basics
- Meeting point
The sound will be extremely loud within the foghorn field and anywhere near the foghorn house. You'll be able to hear it from up to a mile or two away!
- Other
Did you know? While the lighthouse was operational, the foghorn would be sounded when visibility fell below two miles in the daytime or the lights of the Tyne and Wear piers could not be made out at night. The current horns are the fourth set Souter has had since the lighthouse was built it 1871. They are kept in working order by our dedicated team of engineering volunteers.
