Wallington photography competition 2025 terms & conditions 

Imagery 

Categories include: 

  • Up close 

  • Wildlife 

  • Autumn colour 

Entrants must specify which of the following class they are submitting their works for: 

  • 16 & over 
  • Under 16

  • Photographs must be taken in North East England. We’re not looking for images of famous landmarks (e.g. The Angel of the North) unless it also fulfils one of these criteria. 

  • Images must not contain any people. Any images that do will be disqualified.   

  • Entries must not have won any competition prize previously.  

  • Photographers may edit their images (e.g. to enhance colours or remove spots), but all edits should be listed alongside the submission. Digital manipulation (e.g. overlays of images) will not be allowed. 

  • Images of wildlife should be of native UK species captured in the wild and the welfare of the animals must be considered at all times. Entrants must not cause injury or do anything to distress any animal or damage its habitat, either deliberately or inadvertently, whilst trying to take a photograph. This includes the flying of drones, which should not be flown too close or too noisily to wildlife, or their habitats or nest sites. Submissions 

  • Individuals can enter a maximum of 3 photographs in total. Each photograph should be named as follows: [YourName][Category][Class]. For example, "JaneDoe_AutumnColour_Over16".   

  • Image files (from both digital cameras and smartphones) should be a minimum resolution of 300 dpi. We regret that we are unable to accept postal entries and submissions via social media. 

  • Initial entries should be no more than 10MB in size. The winning entries will be contacted for higher resolution images.   

  • Photographs can be submitted from 13 September until 23.59 hours on 21 December 2025 (‘Closing Date’). 

  • Late, incomplete or corrupt entries will not be accepted.   

  • Unsuccessful entrants will not be contacted and no feedback on any entry will be provided. 

Who can enter 

  • This competition is not open to employees of the National Trust. 

  • Any entrants under the age of 18 must have permission from their parent/guardian to take part in the competition, and the parent/guardian agrees to the terms and conditions on their behalf. 

Judging 

  • The judging criteria is the most visually appealing interpretation of the theme for each category.  

  • Judging will be undertaken by a panel comprising one National Trust representative and two independent, local professional photographers.

  • The decision of the panel is final and no correspondence will be entered into.   

Winners and highly commended 

  • Up to 30 winning photographs will be chosen to become part of an outdoor exhibition of images at Wallington in autumn 2026 (dates to be confirmed).  

  • Winning entries will receive a form to complete, requesting further information about their photograph(s) including inspiration, shooting style etc, as well as how the image should be credited. 

  • Highly commended images will be chosen for display in the House at Wallington for the dates to be confirmed as above. 

  • We will notify the winning and highly commended entries by 1 March 2026. Winning entrants will receive one free entry for themself and up to 3 guests to visit Wallington in autumn 2026 to visit the display. Highly commended entrants will receive one free entry for themself and 1 guest to visit the display. Winning entrants will also be invited to attend a special preview event at Wallington to launch the exhibition. 

  • All images submitted must be the work of the individual submitting them and must not have been published elsewhere or have won a prize in any other photographic competition.    

  • Photos printed for the exhibition in 2026 will be required for the full exhibition and won’t be available for purchase or for winners to take home. 

  • Events may occur that render the competition itself impossible due to reasons beyond the control of the National Trust and accordingly the National Trust may at its absolute discretion vary or amend the promotion and the entrant agrees that no liability shall attach to the promoter as a result thereof.   

Licensing & permissions 

  • You agree to grant the National Trust a non-exclusive royalty free licence to publish your image(s) for the autumn 2026 exhibition and for publicity and marketing related to the promotion of the display for this and future competitions on the National Trust’s website, on social media and in its retail and all necessary consents including under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 to enable the National Trust to change (including crop, edit, modify or adapt), publish, distribute, exhibit, use and otherwise exploit your Images whether alone or incorporated in or in conjunction with other works within the UK for all the uses outlined above (the “Licensed Rights”). Copyright in image(s) vests in the entrant.  

  • You confirm that the image(s) does/do not, to your reasonable knowledge and belief, incorporate any material that infringes the copyright or any other rights of any third party.   

  • You hereby waive in favour of the National Trust all the moral rights in your Images to which you may be entitled under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 as amended from time to time to the extent necessary for the National Trust to exploit the Licensed Rights in accordance with these terms.  

  • English law applies and the exclusive jurisdiction of the English Courts shall prevail. 

  • Entrants – including those using drones – must have the necessary permits and licences for photographing wildlife, and should, where necessary, have permission from the landowners to be on their land. They should be ready to provide proof if asked to do so by the competition organisers. 

  • All information detailing how to enter this competition forms part of these terms and conditions. It is a condition of entry that all terms and conditions are adhered to. Submission of an entry will be taken to mean acceptance of these terms and conditions
