Home to the Verney family since 1620, Claydon has been demolished and rebuilt twice, but what remains today is a treasure trove of decorative artistry and historic charm. Step inside to experience some of the finest examples of rococo architecture in England, including intricate woodcarvings by Luke Lightfoot, one of the most celebrated craftsmen of the 18th century.
Marvel at the stunning Chinese Room, considered one of the most important examples of chinoiserie in the country, and explore rooms used in famous film and television productions like Bridgerton and Far from the Madding Crowd.
One of the most enchanting features of the house is the remarkable Grand Stairs, inlaid with ivory and marquetry and adorned with a wrought iron balustrade featuring delicate ears of wheat. In the past, as visitors ascended, the ironwork would gently rustle, earning it the name 'the singing staircase.'
Claydon also holds a fascinating personal connection to Florence Nightingale, who frequently visited the house after her sister married into the Verney family. Don’t miss the room where she stayed and wrote during her time here.
After your visit, relax in our cosy second-hand bookshop, where you’re welcome to browse, sit, and unwind. Or enjoy the peaceful surroundings with a picnic on the South Lawn and sweeping views from the West Terrace.
