Longshaw, Burbage and the Eastern Moors area of the Peak District offer schools and groups perfect opportunities for inspirational outdoor experiences and educational visits, in landscapes packed with wildlife.

Find out more about our exciting and enriching learning activities, designed to help visitors discover the special qualities of the Peak District and the wildlife within it.

Our programmes for schools are designed to compliment relevant areas of the curriculum. They provide practical skills and the opportunity for exploration, creativity and enjoyment through a child centred approach.

Booking information for visits led by National Trust staff

Essential pre-visit information

Self led school visits

Many schools choose to deliver their own field trip. We've put together some advice notes and guidance and how to run a self-led field visit to Longshaw. This includes specific information for Hydrology fieldwork.

Please note much of the Longshaw Estate is designated as SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) by Natural England so schools should gain landowners approval from us before carrying out fieldwork.

Our carparking is limited and on busy days we may struggle to accommodate large groups dropping off or picking up. Spaces for coaches and minibuses (including pick up and drop off) are very limited. All coaches and minibus parking must be prebooked. Please note we do not allow any coach parking, pick up or drop off at weekends. If you have the National Trust Group Access Pass, you will be allowed to park, pick up and drop off free of charge if booked in advance, otherwise standard parking charges apply.

Please email mdc@nationaltrust.org.uk or download, complete and return our Enquiry Form

On the day of your visit

  • On arrival, your group will be met by a member of the Welcome Team.
  • Coach drivers will be directed to the designated coach parking area in Woodcroft car park.
  • Please organise pupils into small supervised groups when using the toilets to avoid overcrowding.
  • If eating lunch on site, please use outdoor spaces away from the café area, which can become very busy.
  • Please take litter home or use the bins provided. Bin bags can be supplied if needed.

To help visits run smoothly and safely:

  • Teachers and supporting adults should supervise an allocated small group of pupils throughout the day, including at lunchtime.
  • Pupils must not work or explore anywhere on the Estate unsupervised.
  • Large groups should split into smaller units while moving around the Estate.
  • School staff remain responsible for behaviour management and first aid provision.
  • All visitors should follow the Countryside Code and help us “Respect, Protect and Enjoy” this special landscape.
  • Pupils should show consideration for other visitors, National Trust staff and local residents.

Please note: schools undertaking hydrology fieldwork may only use the approved fieldwork locations shared before the visit.
