Sustainable travel in the Peak District and Derbyshire

Whether you’re looking to travel by train, bus, bike or foot. Plan your day out in the Peak District and Derbyshire using greener travel options.

Travel by bus

  • Calke Abbey - From Burton-upon-Trent (High Street): Midland Classic to Swadlincote Bus Station (Routes 4, 9, 19) and then Arriva (Route 2) and alight at Ticknall (Calke Abbey Entrance). From Derby Bus Station: Arriva (Route 2) and alight at Ticknall (Calke Abbey Entrance). From the entrance, it's a 1½ mile walk through the park.
  • Hardwick Hall – Stagecoach run a service between Chesterfield and Nottingham, alight at Glapwell (2 miles from Hardwick Hall).
  • Kedleston Hall – The 114 service from Derby to Ashbourne calls at Kedleston on summer Saturdays only, otherwise alight at The Smithy, a 1 mile walk from the Hall.
  • The Children's Country House at Sudbury Hall - Route 401 between Burton and Uttoexeter stops along the main road, Sudbury, a short walk from the Hall.
  • Longshaw, Burbage & the Eastern Moors - Bus services available from Sheffield and the Peak District. Alight at Fox House, which is a short walk from Longshaw.
  • Ilam Park, Dovedale & the White Peak - Bus services from Buxton train station to Ashbourne, alight at Thorpe which is a 2 mile walk to Ilam and Dovedale.

  • Calke Abbey - The nearest train station is Derby (9.5 miles) or Burton on Trent (10 miles), both stations have taxi services available.
  • Hardwick Hall – The nearest train station is Chesterfield (9.5 miles), taxis are usually available.
  • Kedleston Hall – The nearest train stations are Duffield (3.5 miles) and Derby (5.5 miles), taxis are usually available.
  • The Children's Country House at Sudbury Hall – The nearest station is Tutbury & Hatton (5 miles), taxis are usually available.
  • Longshaw, Burbage & the Eastern Moors – The nearest train station is Grindleford (1.5 miles).
  • Kinder Scout - The nearest station is Edale (3.5 miles), taxis are available.
  • Foremark - The nearest train stations are Derby (11 miles) and Burton (8.5 miles), taxis are usually available.
  • Staunton Harold - The nearest train stations are Derby (9 miles) and Burton (10 miles), taxis are usually available

Cycle routes

The National Cycle Network (NCN) is a UK-wide network of signed paths and routes, ideal if you’re looking to reach places by bike.

  • The Children's Country House at Sudbury Hall - NCN54.
  • Ilam Park - NCN568 is within 2 miles.

Arriving by foot

  • Ilam Park – can be reached via quiet roads and footpaths off the Tissington Trail and Limestone Way
  • Kinder Scout – is on the Pennine Way

Electric parking

We're working with a new supplier, RAW Charging, to bring more electric vehicle charging points to the places in our care.

At Hardwick Hall we have electric vehicle charging points available in the lower car park.
