Chris Gilbert is a West Sussex-based printmaker working across woodcut and etching. His practice grew from a lifelong love of drawing and photography, with the natural environment providing the inspiration for much of his work. Chris’s prize-winning woodblock print, Jay, is part of a series depicting birds in their everyday environments. Its simplified forms and bold shapes recall the character of early twentieth-century book illustration while expressing the distinctive qualities of the woodcut process.
Claire Scott is a Sussex-based ceramic artist whose work explores history, place and memory. Drawing on historical objects and social narratives, Claire considers the traces left by past lives, materials and traditions of making. Her prize-winning Stoneware Jug with Ornate Handle and Clay Sprigs combines usefulness with careful craftsmanship and decorative Victorian detailing. Inspired by Standen and William Morris’s ideals, it celebrates the Arts and Crafts belief that functional objects can also bring beauty into everyday life.
