Sgwrs : Gardens of Friendship, Lady Cecil Rice & Her Female Networks

Join historian Sara Fox to hear about the research she has undertaken for National Trust Dinefwr into Lady Cecil Rice, painted on two occasions by renowned 18th century portrait painter Joshua Reynolds.

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event (admission applies)

The personal stories of women, even wealthy and privileged women are often untraceable, especially if a limited written record of them survives. However, clues about their personality and motivations can be gleaned from the sporadic references to them in the letters and diaries of their friends, family and contemporaries, and in the factual circumstances of their lives.

This talk will attempt to piece together the personal history of a woman who as a child overcame the scandalous separation of her parents, consoling her mother in their ‘Friendship Garden’. Later Cecil achieved a happy marriage and motherhood but still took an interest in the female intellectual world, whilst managing the Dinefwr Estate and its attendant charitable duties in widowhood. As her memorial asserts, she was ‘possessed of a superior understanding and most benevolent heart’.

Everyone is welcome! Free event, normal admission charges apply, no need to book. The event will be held in the Dining Room of Newton House

The Dining Room is on the ground floor of Newton House, there is a small ramp to access the house, and a slight incline from the Car Park to the front door.
