Helios at night, with a one-off live performance at Coventry Charterhouse

Experience Luke Jerram’s glowing sun sculpture Helios in the walled garden, accompanied by a live performance of Surya, a powerful new musical work by arts organisation Manasamitra.

  • Booking essential

On the 8th August only, discover Helios after dark at Coventry Charterhouse - an extraordinary fusion of art, light and sound.

Created by artist Luke Jerram, Helios is a seven-metre spherical sculpture of the sun. Combining solar imagery, light and a soundscape made from NASA recordings, it reveals the sun’s intricate surface in stunning detail.

Helios will be accompanied by a live outdoor performance by Manasamitra, an acclaimed arts organisation known for creating immersive, cross-cultural musical experiences.

Their latest piece, Surya, is a 60-minute improvised performance inspired by the Hindu sun god. Blending Indian vocals by Supriya Nagarajan and harp by Lucy Nolan, it reflects the brilliance, rhythm and radiance of sunlight, capturing the sensory power of the sun through sound.

As Helios glows overhead in the walled garden, Surya offers a meditative and uplifting musical journey in a setting shaped by peace and nature. The performance will begin at 8.15pm and finish at 9.15pm.

Manasamitra has toured nationally and internationally, with recent performances at the Royal Albert Hall, Southbank Centre, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and Jaipur Literature Festival.

Together, these two works invite audiences to experience the power and beauty of the sun in a whole new way.

Helios has been co-commissioned by National Trust, Cork Midsummer Festival, Liverpool Cathedral, Old Royal Naval College and University College London.

Helios will be temporarily paused if the wind picks up, to ensure the safety of the artwork and visitors. The artwork is made from a delicate material and even mild wind speeds might mean that we have to take it down. We won't take the decision lightly as we hate to disappoint our visitors but if we do, we'll try and give as much notice as we're able to. If we do cancel and you've booked a ticket to one of our evening events you'll be notified via email from our events team. Please note: The house will be closed during evening events, but the gardens will remain open for viewing Helios.
