Join us in celebrating Blossom at Croome.
Throughout spring, visitors, volunteers, and staff have created, handcrafted origami blossoms to celebrate the important role of blossom in Croome's landscape.
Blossom plays a vital role to play in the natural world. It helps wildlife move around landscapes, provides food and shelter for many species and stores carbon. Their bursts of blossom – blackthorn, hawthorn, dog rose, wild cherry, apple and plum – are not only striking but a good source of nectar for bumblebees and butterflies. The fruit they produce in autumn is eaten by flocks of migrating and overwintering birds, including redwings and fieldfares. The trunks and branches of traditional varieties of fruit trees are great homes for rare species, such as the noble chafer beetle, and are excellent hunting grounds for bats. Not only this, but the blossom attracts pollinators, which are vital to our ecosystem.
The origami patterns can be found in the National Trust Origami Blossom book. Throughout the year, we will work with visitors, partnerships, and volunteers to add to the display reflecting the changing seasonal landscape. This project forms part of our Pages From Nature programme, celebrating the diverse and important plant collection held at Croome.
