Chippendale Tour: Rome or Ruin?

Step into the neoclassical world of Nostell’s library on an in-depth Chippendale Tour.

  • Booking essential
  • Admission applies

Join one of our experienced volunteer guides to explore the classical influences behind Nostell’s striking Library. Discover why Roman style was the height of fashion in the 18th century, and how Thomas Chippendale interpreted this new classical language in his furniture.

In collaboration with Nostell’s architect Robert Adam, a complete Neoclassical interior was created in Nostell’s library, showcasing its owner’s taste and learning.

No gentleman of taste would have skipped the Grand Tour of Italy—but how far did the Winn family actually travel? Was their Roman-inspired dream for Nostell ever completed? And did it deliver the success they were hoping for?

The tour will last for 30 minutes and there will be opportunity to ask questions.
