Chippendale Tour: Faraway Shores?

Step into the imagined East of 18th-century Europe on on an in-depth Chippendale tour.

  • Booking essential
  • Admission applies

Take a closer look inside Nostell’s State Apartments on this in-depth tour, uncovering how 18th-century Europeans expressed their fascination with China through interior design and collecting.

Discover how Chinese objects were imported, imitated, or reinterpreted to suit European tastes, and how designers like Thomas Chippendale crafted immersive interiors in the popular ‘Chinese style’.

Visitors wanted to be transported to distant lands - without leaving the comfort of Yorkshire. But how authentic were these imagined spaces? And what do they reveal about Europe’s relationship with China at the time?

The tour will last for 30 minutes and there will be opportunity to ask questions.
