Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions
Ashridge has been a Duke of Edinburgh destination for multiple decades. Groups of teenagers often finish their expedition in front of the impressive Bridgewater Monument, or use the estate's footpaths to reach their next pit stop. Whether it's a practice run or a formal expedition there are a few things to note before planning an excursion through Ashridge.
Planning your expedition
If you are planning on bringing a DofE group to the estate (including to access a start/finish point or walking through the estate), you must obtain the permission of the Visitor Experience Manager. Similar to other organised groups, we need to know which parts of the estate you will be using and when to expect you. Please ring the Visitor Centre on 01442 851227 to discuss details of your expedition and to obtain permission.
Ashridge estate is a free entry countryside site that receives no governmental funding, so we gratefully accept any donations made by Duke of Edinburgh groups. These donations go towards the upkeep of Visitor Centre facilities (such as toilets), as well as vital conservation work across the wider estate.
Things to note
Due to the popularity of the site we kindly ask that any DofE drop-offs or pick-ups involving coaches or minibuses occur nearer the bottom Monument Drive, as opposed to in the main car park area. If vehicles need to be present during the day parking can be found on either side of Monument Drive.
Completing an expedition is quite an accomplishment, and organisers often wish to congratulate their participants. Please note that due to the presence of Scheduled Ancient Monuments no flags or gazebos may be erected on Monument Green. If you wish to erect a gazebo you may do so in Meadley's Meadow - please mention this when discussing your expedition with the Visitor Experience Manager.
We ask that you take any litter home with you. This includes expedition participants, organisers and spectators. Please note that only food and drinks purchased from the café are permitted in the outdoor seating area.
