Two children running ahead of grandparents at Ashridge, Herts

The woods may be quiet in winter, with few creatures coming out to say hello. However, under your feet there is a hive of activity. Learn more about the fascinating animals that live below during our Going Underground trail and craft from Mon 17 - Fri 21 Feb, 10am - 3pm (last entry 2.30pm).

Have you ever thought about what's going on in the world beneath your feet. From minibeasts crawling though the earth to mighty moles and wiggling worms, there's lots of species to learn about this February half term. By following our trail through the woods, you'll get to find out some fascinating facts about these creatures, all while enjoying the last of the crisp winter air.

After your trail you can warm up and make your own craft to take home so you can remember your day at the visitor centre.

This engaging trail and craft is available from our visitor centre reception and costs £3 per child.

Planning your visit

Ashridge Estate is a family-friendly place. Our trail footpath is accessible for pushchairs, although it may be a little muddy. Zip up your raincoat and pull on your wellies, so you are prepared to splash about in any puddles that are around. Once you've finished, grab a hot drink and a tasty snack in the Brownlow Café.
