Peppercombe Valley Circular

Running trail

This is a one mile circular route starting and finishing at Peppercombe. This route can be made a shorter circular of just over half a mile, see steps below. The route incorporates wooded valley and quiet tracks.

Start:

From the bothy turn right, then immediately turning left signed Coastguard/Coombe Cottages, Northway.

Follow the path up past the holiday cottages, through the gate and past the house.

Continue following the track up the valley.

Upon reaching a sign with Malcolm's path to the left. For the shorter route turn left here and follow Malcolm's path to the other side of the valley. For the longer route continue up the track to the top. Shorter route jump to step 6.

At the top, turn left signed 'Public Footpath', through the gate signed 'Peppercombe' and follow the track down the valley.

Continue on down the valley, passing over the bridge and past the cottage. You'll find the bothy approximately 80 metres down on your right.

Terrain

The route is hilly and undulating with steps, pedestrian gates and bridges. The route is uneven and can be slippery when wet. There are two benches along the route. The route is unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs as some sections are a little narrower and the route contains steps. The route is accessible to walkers, joggers to runners. Due to the number of trees along this route it is advised you only use it during daylight hours and not in windy conditions. Dogs are welcome under close control.

How to get here

Address

By train

Barnstaple, 14.5 miles (23km) from Horns Cross.

By road

From Bude: Take the A39 through Kilkhampton, continue on past Clovelly and Bucks Cross. On arrival at Horns Cross turn left next to the Coach and Horses pub and walk down the lane to the National Trust Gate on the right, follow the track to the bottom. No parking in the valley unless staying in holiday accommodation, parking in layby on A39.

From Bideford: Take the A39, past Fairy Cross, arriving at Horns Cross, parking in layby on the left. Walk up to the Coach and Horses pub and follow the lane past pub car park to the National Trust gate on the right, follow the track to the bottom.

By foot

On the South West coast path between Abbotsham and Bucks Mills.

By bicycle

Directions same as by road, please be aware these are busy main roads.
