Key Stage 4 & 5: Fact into fiction in the works of Thomas Hardy
Inspiring writing in amazing places.
Venue: Hardy’s Cottage & Thorncombe Woods.
Duration: Two hours.
Price per student: £4 + VAT with Education Group Membership, or £6.50 + VAT without.
Curriculum: English & Experiential Learning.
Students will investigate Hardy’s writing of The Mayor of Casterbridge. This is a novel which draws closely on actual historical events in nineteenth-century Dorset. While working on the novel Hardy scrutinized editions of a local newspaper, The Dorset County Chronicle, to find unusual or distinctive events on which he could base his story. Using objects and text, students will gain insight into how a local writer engages with ongoing themes and issues across distinct time periods in his craft.
