Eelbeck Cottage

Soak up the views from this former farm labourer’s cottage which mixes traditional touches with modern decor in a wonderful mountain setting. Sitting on Eskdale Campsite at the bottom of one of England’s steepest roads - the Hardknott pass - you’ll be captivated by the landscape and the opportunities for outdoor adventure when you stay.

Inside the cottage, the gorgeous farmhouse-style kitchen with its Rayburn and dining area is the main focus of the place. You’ll find this sociable space down one step from the hallway, where it really does feel like the heart of the home. The ground floor also has an entrance hall with a toilet and shower room off it and a snug living room with an Everhot electric stove. Halfway up the stairs is the family bathroom with a separate bath and shower. Then the four bedrooms upstairs are beautifully furnished, perfect for a relaxing night of sleep after a day exploring the area. When the sun shines, there’s a patio area behind the cottage with outdoor furniture so you can head outside for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

You’ll need to drive through the charming campsite where this sizeable cottage is located at the back of the campsite. When you stay, you can easily nip to the campsite shop to stock up on the essentials (closed in January and February). Explore the stunning site on foot, and pick up the path from your doorstep which leads to the local pub and passes by a tumbling beck and historic watermill. The magic continues with stepping stones and peaceful rock pools all waiting to be discovered close to St Catherine’s Church, a short walk away from the cottage. For a day when you are feeling more energetic, Stanley Ghyll Force, a jaw-dropping 60-foot high waterfall in a deep gorge, is an exciting day out. 

The cottage is located close to the village of Boot, boasting three traditional Lakeland pubs. Serious walkers can take the route to Harter Fell, a quiet but incredibly beautiful spot with panoramic views of Scafell Pike and the southern fells. Once you’re all walked out, then the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, locally known as La'al Ratty, offers a chance to sit back and take in the wonderful views from the steam train. You could also head out on your bike up one of England's steepest roads to Hardknott Roman Fort or go westwards and combine a train or bike ride with a trip to Muncaster Castle.
