Guide to Great Langdale Campsite
Find all the information you need to book and plan your holiday at Great Langdale Campsite.
-
Please do book in advance online. You can book for same-day arrival.
-
In the booking system, choose your pitch, reading the description carefully. On arrival, you can choose your pitch from those available in the meadows as we don't allocate or reserve specific pitches.
-
The maximum number of adults allowed in a group is four, whether you book together or separately. This is to help preserve the tranquility at the campsite, which isn't suited to larger gatherings.
-
If you have a special request, including for adjacent camping pitches, please let us know in your booking. We'll do our best although we can't guarantee requests or adjacent pitches. If you are pitching next to friends or family, there should be no more than four adults in your combined group. There must be 6m between tents.
-
Under-18s must be accompanied by an adult.
-
The minimum stay is two nights, and three nights on Bank Holiday weekends.
-
We offer a car free discount if you arrive on foot, by bike or by public transport (offer not available on group bookings). Please retain any public transport tickets to claim the discount. Ask for details at reception when you arrive.
-
We welcome organised groups like Duke of Edinburgh and Scouts. Please complete the group booking form at the bottom of the page and we'll get back to you.
-
You don't have to be a member of the National Trust to camp and we are unable to offer member discounts due to the regulations we are governed by as a charity. If you'd like to be a member and support our work, please speak to the team at reception.
-
The site is closed 23 - 27 December 2024.
-
Arriving by car: From Ambleside, follow the A593 road. At Skelwith Bridge, turn right onto the B5343. The campsite is approximately 6 miles down the road, on the left-hand side, a few hundred yards after you pass the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel and Sticklebarn pub. If you reach the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel you've gone too far.
Arriving by public transport: Trains to the Lake District terminate at Windermere railway station. From Windermere take the 505 or 599 bus to Ambleside, and from Ambleside you can pick up the 516 Langdale Rambler. For timetable information, call 0871 200 22 33 or visit Traveline or Cumbria County Council.
Hiking/cycling between campsites: There are numerous walks and cycle routes between our campsites. Plan your route with OS map OL7 (English lakes, South-eastern area for Low Wray / Great Langdale) and OS map OL6 (English lakes, South-western area for Great Langdale / Wasdale). You can also use Harveys BMC 1:40,000 map, which shows all our campsites on one map.
-
Please arrive from 12noon for camping pitches and 3pm for pods.
-
You'll find the arrivals car park just before the barrier on the left as you enter the site. Please park up and report to reception before pitching your tent.
-
If reception is closed, you'll find an envelope with your name on the arrivals board. You’ll have all the information you need to get settled in and start your holiday, including a map showing where to pitch. We'll be on site for any queries.
-
Please leave at least six metres between tents and campervans (including any awnings).
-
On your day of departure, please leave your pitch or pod by 11am. Unless the site is full, you'll be able to leave your car on site for the rest of the day.
-
If you'd like to extend your stay, please check availability at reception between 8am and 10am.
-
-
There are 120 natural tent pitches scattered informally across the camping meadows.
-
The maximum number of adults allowed in any party is four. This applies whether you book together or separately, and is to help preserve the tranquility of the campsite.
-
In the booking system, read the pitch descriptions carefully to choose one that's the right size for your tent.
-
There's no electric hook-up.
-
Please let us know in your booking if you would like space for a gazebo, mess tent or tarp. Additional charges will apply for structures that take up additional space, and you'll be able to pay for them onsite.
-
Please pitch at least 6m from fellow campers.
-
Cars are parked away from the camping fields, but it's not far to carry your gear.
-
- We welcome campervans and motorhomes up to 6.5m in length, as well as roof tents. Sorry, the site isn't suitable for caravans or trailer tents of any size.
- There are 13 hardstanding pitches with electric hook-up. Please read the descriptions in the booking system carefully to choose the one that's right for you.
- We also have space for a few campervans without electric hook-up in the parking area. You can book a space online, and then choose your spot from those available on arrival.
- If you have a favourite pitch, please let us know in your booking and we'll do our best.
- A chemical toilet disposal facility/Elsan is available. We don't have a drive-over facility for grey waste but if you have a hose, you are able to dispose into the drains at the toilet blocks.
-
Think of a pod as a replacement for a tent. You'll need to bring everything you would bring if you were camping in a tent, such as a sleeping bag, sleeping mat (if you'd like to put it on top of the mats provided), pots and pans, a stove and camping chairs.
-
Pods are insulated and have heat, light and sockets. They have a window and glass doors that open onto a small deck. Each pod has a picnic table outside.
-
There are nine pods - three Standard Pods and six Plus Pods.
-
Standard Pods are suitable for either two adults and one child, or a maximum of two adults. They are one room and have floor mattresses.
-
Plus Pods are suitable for two adults and two children, or a maximum of three adults. The Plus Pods have a front section with two single beds and mattresses, designed to be used as seating during the day. There is storage space below. The back section has mats for another two people, which can be folded up to provide two more seats. There are hooks for hanging rucksacks and jackets.
-
Each pod has a parking space nearby.
-
The pods are not dog friendly and guests staying in the pods are not permitted to bring dogs to the campsite.
-

Problem or complaint: Every reasonable care will be taken to ensure that the camping pitch, pod or bothy and also site amenities are presented to a high standard. Should you find any cause for complaint, please immediately contact one of the campsite staff, so that reasonable steps can then be taken to rectify the problem. If you supplied an email address at the time of booking, a survey will be emailed to you for your comments after your stay. Alternatively, a comment form may be completed and left at the campsite reception. All complaints made after the Visitor’s departure should be made in writing by post or email to:
