In a quiet, wooded valley by Dolaucothi Gold Mine with history going back to the Romans.
Dolaucothi is a peaceful escape for self-contained caravans and motorhomes, surrounded by nature on the Dolaucothi estate. It's a great spot to get away from it all, for a short, restful break or a longer holiday of a week or two. There are networks of paths across the estate, taking in the hills, woods, meadows and riverside, and the nearby Dolaucothi Gold Mine is free for you to visit during your stay. The estate is very dog friendly.
There are more than 2,500 acres of estate to explore here, with bluebells in the spring and lovely autumn colour later in the year. Walk up to the trig point, the highest point on the estate, for views across the valley. The area is a haven for wildlife, with kingfishers and otters by the river and many species of bat finding homes in the mines.
Dolaucothi Gold Mine is a short walk away and has history reaching back 2,000 years to the Romans, who created open-cast workings and dug tunnels to exploit the gold veins. The mine was working again at the turn of the twentieth century until the 1930s, and you'll see machinery and tools from that time as well as Roman artefacts. If you'd like to go underground to take a tour of the mine's underground workings, be sure to book your timed entry. The bedrock here is approximately 438 million years old, and the local geology is fascinating.
The local area is rural and quiet, but you only have to drive about 20 minutes to Lampeter or Llandello for shops, cafés and pubs. You could even head to the coast; Aberaeron is about 45 minutes away.
Check-in is from 2pm, with departures by 12noon. The site it for self-contained caravans and motorhomes only. For directions, dogs, local area guides and more, please check the Guide to Dolaucothi Caravan and Motorhome Park.
