Murlough National Nature Reserve has officially been named ‘Favourite Nature Reserve’ in Northern Ireland as voted for by members of the public in the second annual WalkNI Awards.

Celebrating all that is great about walking in Northern Ireland, award categories this year included favourite walk destination and routes as well as the best views, festivals and events with over 1,900 votes being cast via

In a closely fought contest with Glenariff Nature reserve, Murlough National Nature Reserve was crowned 'Favourite Nature Reserve'. As Northern Ireland’s first nature reserve and a mere 6,000 years of natural history, we couldn’t be happier to have received this award as voted for by members of the public.

Patrick Lynch, Lead Conservation Ranger at Murlough said, ''We are so happy to have won this award from Walk NI, especially as it was voted for by the public. Our small team of staff and volunteers works hard to conserve this precious, fragile habit and look after the amazing landscape of Murlough so it's wonderful to see that people enjoy the place as much as we do.'

South Down swept the board with Walk NI awards, with Castle Ward picking up Favourite Country Park / Estate, and the Mournes also receiving Favourite Walking Destination. Our teams work hard to care and look after these places, so we’re so pleased that our visitors are enjoying our places and in turn, helping us keep looking after them for the future.
