Escorted visits to Orford Ness

Group enjoying their time at Orford Ness

Orford Ness is the perfect destination for a group day out. There's something for everyone – an internationally important National Nature Reserve alongside an intriguing history of over 80 years as a top-secret military test site.

Planning your group visit

Orford Ness welcomes group visits throughout our visitor open season, from Easter to October, although space for group visits and tours is limited during the peak summer months of July to August. Visiting in our quieter periods also allows you to enjoy the Ness on days when we are not usually open to the public. We recommend that you allow at least three hours to gain a good overview of the site, although, of course, you are welcome to spend longer here.

The tours usually include access into the AWRE area not usually open to the general public. Due to health and safety reasons, access to the interior of the AWRE buildings is not allowed, although tours will get as close to the exterior of the buildings as possible.

Please note, tours are subject to availability and that arrangement shouldn’t be made until confirmation has been received.

Guided Walking Tours

The Ness is best experienced on foot and we offer a choice of half day (3hours) or full day (6hours) walks to explore the site. The tours cover the landscape and wildlife of the Ness alongside the military history, but content can be adapted according to group needs. Group bookings are for a minimum of 12 but we can accommodate up to 24 on a tour. Larger groups may require splitting into smaller groups due to ferry capacity.

Guided trailer tours

If you prefer not to walk, we can offer tours in our vehicle drawn passenger trailer. While the majority of the tour will be driven, there will be some short walking involved if you wish to visit displays within buildings. Group bookings are for a minimum of 12 but we can accommodate up to 24 on our trailer.

Special interest tours

We can tailor tours for specific groups such as photography groups. The tours usually last all day and include support of a ranger and professional experts. These tours are usually operated on days when we are usually closed to the public to allow for a closer look at the landscape of Orford Ness and are usually limited to 12 people.
