In the orchard

Pruning in the orchard at Parke, Devon

A team of rangers and volunteers manage the orchard.

Pruning is one of the jobs in the orchard that can only be done during the winter months when the trees are dormant. By regular pruning, a good open shape is created, allowing the sun and air to reach the fruit and also to make life easier when harvesting.  At the same time the rangers keep an eye out for any signs of disease or pests.

In spring the buds on the trees can be seen swelling, with the promise of blossom and fruit to come.
