Learning opportunities at Portstewart Strand

Children walking through dunes

The diverse landscape at Portstewart Strand provides a great outdoor learning opportunity for schools. Take a look at the sessions we offer for an interactive learning experience.

Dune discovery

Pupils investigate the stunning and extensive dune system at Portstewart Strand through a scavenger hunt on the beach and a trek through the dunes. They will learn about how this environment is formed, the use in the past, present and future and tackle questions concerning the environment.

Barmouth birdhide bonanza

You'll get the unique opportunity for some outstanding bird watching from a hide ideally located at the Barmouth Estuary. Pupils will consider the habitats present in this area and explore through an interactive programme, bird adaptation, relationships and interactions in the environment with migration and conservation issues.

Habitat management

Secondary school pupils investigate how we manage such a sensitive and fragile environment like Portstewart Strand and dunes. Special designations and their impacts will be discussed as well as the latest MOSS scheme (Management Of Sensitive Sites). A dune walk gives the opportunity to look at some of the measures in place.
