Beach cleans on Gower
On Gower, we’re passionate about keeping our beaches clean and we know that we're not alone. Last year we were overwhelmed with the help from volunteers, groups and visitors who came along to help us with our beach cleans.
In 2018, we collected a whopping 10 tonnes of rubbish from our Gower beaches.
You may remember we held a Big Beach Clean Challenge, working our way around the coast of Gower, picking litter from a different beach each month. We received a huge amount of help (over 260 volunteers!) and between us we managed to collect a total of 170 bags of rubbish from these monthly litter picks alone.
If you’d like to get involved this year, there are several different ways in which you can help….
Love Our Beach:
Our ranger Kathryn regularly takes a Land Rover on to Rhossili beach during the school holidays and asks our visitors if they can spare ten minutes to pick up some rubbish. Its really gratifying to see how many people help out. As well as getting the rubbish off the beach, it highlights the problem and makes people think. The days and times vary, depending on tides etc, but will be at least once a week during school holidays.
Saturday Beach Cleans:
These are organised by our area ranger Claire along with volunteers from our Saturday volunteering group. Just pop along anytime between 10am and 3pm, dates and locations below:
• Llangennith – Saturday 2 February
• Nicholaston - Saturday 4 May
• Three Cliffs - Saturday 3 August
• Rhossili – Saturday 2 November
The Great British Beach Clean at Rhossili:
Join us on Rhossili beach on Saturday 21 September between 12.30pm-3.30pm. In conjunction with the Marine Conservation Society, we survey the rubbish found and the survey data is then used by MCS to lobby the source industries into taking action to reduce the waste their sector generates.
