In shore from the beach at Sandscale are a series of wet meadows. A real haven for wildlife whatever the season.
Away from the beach there is a series of grasslands and woodlands which flood in the wetter months creating a rich home for different kinds of wildlife. In the winter these damp areas are a haven for ducks such as teal and pintail and large numbers of snipe can be found feeding on the wet grassland.
In the summer, parts of the wet meadow dry out and are home to such a mix of wildflowers including lousewort and yellow iris. The pools that remain are alive with dragonflies and damselflies.
