Widecombe's a great place to start to explore Dartmoor. There's plenty of parking and two cafés and pubs in the village. There are some well-known places nearby.
- Houndtor, which is said to have been the vision for The Hound of the Baskerville's.
- Just below Houndtor, the remains of a medieval village, Hundatora, can be seen.
- A little further afield is Haytor - the views from here are truly panoramic. Granite from Haytor quarries was used in the rebuilding of London Bridge.
- Bonehill Rocks - you can look down on the village of Widecombe from here. Bonehill Rocks, along with Haytor, was one of the locations where Steven Spielberg's War Horse was filmed.
If you feel a bit more adventurous, you could see Dartmoor on horseback. You would need to book with Shilstone Rocks http://www.dartmoorstables.com/.
If you'd like to have a circular walk, we have a small booklet (donations gratefully received) with walks starting and finishing in the village ranging from 4-9 miles.
We've lots of information about Dartmoor at Sexton's Cottage and are happy to answer any queries you may have. You can also learn about the area on the Dartmoor National Park website.
