Shopping at the Needles Old Battery
When you arrive, or just before you go, you might like to pop into our Guardroom for a little something to take home.
It might only be small but it’s full of specially made National Trust products inspired by the places we care for. The stock changes seasonally to reflect the altering landscape and time of year, which means that whenever you visit, you’ll find something different to try.
This spring our designers have been inspired by rivers and their surrounding landscapes. Our 'Riverlands' theme explores the rivers in our care and the work that is done to keep them healthy, clean and rich in wildlife. Clean chalk streams and lush wetland grasses inspire designs featured on home and kitchen items through to scarves and bags.
Food and drink
Tasty jams, curds and marmalades line the walls, all made by a small, family business in Devon. Each jar is filled with generous quantities of fresh seasonal ingredients, which are locally sourced and organic where possible. We think they are so tasty that we use the onion marmalade in our dishes in the tea-room. You’ll also find the tea and coffee we serve for sale in the guardroom too. And you can try some of our recipes for yourself, with a range of National Trust cookbooks.
In keeping with the history of the battery, we also have old fashioned sweets, such as fizzy sherbet lemons, colourful jelly beans, tart rhubarb and custards and rich fudge, which have delighted children (and a few adults) for generations.
Something for mini explorers
To keep little ones entertained on the journey home there are retro games and toys perfect for splashing carefully saved pocket money on.
Heading further afield
If you're heading off for a walk around the Needles Headland then the guardroom is a good place to stock up on essential supplies. Bags, hats and local books provide all that you need for a trek or gentle stroll. And your four legged friend will be looked after too with dog leads, eco hygiene bags and hypoallergenic dog treats.
Get closer to nature
There's a wealth of wildlife around the Needles Headland and it's a great area for bird spotting. If you’re not sure what you’ve seen, then we’ve handy guides to flora and fauna and even binoculars so you can get a closer view. With almost 360 degree views of the sea from the Battery, they also come in handy for watching the boats in the Solent as you explore.
The New Battery kiosk
Up at the New Battery, you’ll also find our kiosk. Housed in rooms once used as part of the secret rocket testing site, it serves freshly made teas and coffees and has a small selection of tasty foods to take away. It also has essentials for exploring the Headland further, pocket money treats for little ones and homewares inspired by the season and landscape.
We may not stock every item you see in these photographs, but anything we don’t have is available online, at https://shop.nationaltrust.org.uk/.
