No garden? No problem. Welcome to the National Trust’s Sky Gardening Challenge. Join people who live in flats or apartments across the country and turn your outside space into something special.
Got a balcony? A Juliet balcony? Even just a window box? If you live in a flat - whatever bit of outside you’ve got, it could be brilliant. It could be your little escape, a space that makes you feel good.
What to grow?Whatever you fancy!
Brighten up your view. Grow some herbs you’ll actually use. Add a few flowers and they might become a pit stop for pollinators.
Join the challenge
You’ll be joining people who live in flats and apartments across the country doing exactly the same thing. Trying things out. Learning as they go. Sharing what works and what doesn’t.
Go on, give it a go.

Enter the competition
National Trust’s Sky Gardening Challenge competition aims to find the best sky gardeners – people who live in flats and apartments in England, Wales or Northern Ireland who green small spaces such as balconies and window boxes – and celebrate their achievements.
There are up to 15 prizes to be won, including a day out at the National Trust; £200 of gardening vouchers; a photo book of the finalists’ gardens; and a voucher so winners can capture and print their onward gardening journey, courtesy of the National Trust’s photo printing partner CEWE. You must be 18 or over and live in a flat or apartment.
To enter, share your gardening story with us via the online form below between 1 June 2026 and 16 August 2026. Online entries must include a video or photos and commentary. Alternatively, you can send your photos and commentary to us by post.
For tips on how to take great photos for your competition entry, read this online guide created by National Trust’s photo printing partner, CEWE.
If your entry is shortlisted, we will be in touch by 4 September and our friendly judges will visit your balcony or ground-floor garden between 10-12 and 18-19 September 2026 to meet you, talk about your experience, and judge your entry. Prize winners will be invited to a celebratory event on the afternoon of 17 October 2026.
Full terms and conditions apply.
National Trust’s Sky Gardening Challenge competition is promoted by the National Trust, and supports our work as a charity to inspire people to connect with nature, and through that, connect with our cause.
We recommend that you read the ‘Essential information’ before starting any gardening activities.
