Hydro Open Day

The hydro turbine building on the River Teign will be open for you to look inside. The knowledgeable guide will be able to tell you about the history of this building along with how it was restored and how it works.

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event

This is a free drop in event. Open 11am until 3pm. Come and learn about how hydro power has been used at Castle Drogo from 1929 to the present day. Guides will be opening the Hydro for visitors to come and look inside.

Please Note: The Hydro Turbine relies on the river level to be consistently high to operate so we are unable to guarantee it will be on during your visit.

To get to the Hydro from the Castle Drogo car park please follow the Hunters path down to the Iron Bridge, cross over onto the Foresters track and follow the path towards Fingle Bridge. Alternatively you can access the Hydro from Fingle Bridge by following the Foresters track for around 40 minutes.

Times

The basics

Meeting point

The Hydro Turbine Building is located by the Salmon leaps along the river Teign.

What to bring and wear

Please wear suitable clothing. The Dartmoor weather is changeable and the location requires some walking on rough uneven paths.

Accessibility

The location is around a 40 minute walk down from the castle car park or from Fingle Bridge car park. The route is not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs. From Fingle Bridge following the Foresters track, the route is mainly flat but still requires walking on uneven paths.

Other

There is no charge to access the estate (where the Hydro is located). Car parking charges apply at the Castle Drogo car park and to access the castle and grounds. The event will be cancelled in the event of high winds. Please check the website before travelling.
