The new and improved Sandbanks Jetty closure and what it means to our visitors.

Sandbanks Jetty Project

For almost 30 years, the Sandbanks jetty provided a vital link to Brownsea Island. When part of the ageing structure collapsed in 2024, plans for its replacement were accelerated. The old jetty was removed in 2025, with timber recycled for future island projects.

Construction of a new, improved jetty began in 2025 and was completed in the autumn of 2026 providing a safer, more reliable and accessible gateway to Brownsea for years to come.

Update on the new jetty

After years of planning and construction, boats are once again using the new Sandbanks Jetty, with a limited service now operating for staff and volunteers. While visitor services won't return until 2027, this marks a major milestone in creating a safer, more resilient and accessible gateway to Brownsea Island.

Working around tides and weather has made this a challenging project, and we're hugely grateful to the partners, contractors and site teams who have helped bring it this far. There's still work to do, but seeing boats alongside the jetty again is an exciting glimpse of what's to come.
