Hinton Ampner walled garden appeal

The walled garden at Hinton Ampner is a horticultural jewel in the National Trust’s crown. However, its fragile paths are no longer fit for purpose. Donate today and help us make this beautiful space accessible to everyone.
How will a new path network help?
The walled garden lies to the north of the house and welcomes over 170,000 visitors a year.
Replacing the path network will provide a durable hard surface to improve year-round access for all visitors, and provide ease for wheelchairs, pushchairs and our four-legged friends.
The path system will help alleviate bottlenecks and crowding, and raise garden presentation standards, framing our beautiful beds and borders, allowing visitors to stop and enjoy the space.
How much will this cost?
We anticipate that the project will cost £60,000. We are fortunate enough to have the support of a donor who will match fund the project so, for every pound given to us, it will be matched. For example, if we raise £30,000, the donor will match that amount and give us a further £30,000!
How your money will help
- Improved Accessibility with new resurfaced paths, ensuring wheelchair and pushchair access, making the garden usable throughout the year.
- Widened the entry point of the Walled Garden and created clear signage to help all visitors feel welcomed and orientated.
- Transformed the Potting Shed into a Garden Information Room to create a more inclusive and relevant experience.
- A more sustainable infrastructure by upgrading paths with durable, low-impact materials, reducing waterlogging and erosion, supporting long-term climate resilience plus taking the opportunity to explore rainwater harvesting options as part of the installation.
When will the work take place?
In January 2026 we will start the work on replacing the path network around the Walled Garden. The property is closed for two weeks in January for our annual conservation work, so we hope to agree a project timescale with the contractors that matches this ambition.
By February 2026 we hope to have a beautiful, accessible pathway around the Walled Garden for visitors to enjoy as we enter the spring months.
