For over 300 years, Newtown Old Town Hall has stood at the heart of one of the Isle of Wight's most remarkable historic settlements. Following several years of monitoring and investigation, we are now carrying out essential conservation and structural repairs to help safeguard this Grade II* listed building for future generations.

These carefully planned works will strengthen the building, address structural concerns and protect its historic fabric, helping to secure the Town Hall's long-term future.

While the building remains closed during these works, our aim is to ensure that Newtown Old Town Hall, its stories and its significance can continue to be enjoyed for many years to come.

Why is this work needed?

Although Newtown Old Town Hall has stood for centuries, recent surveys identified structural issues that require specialist attention.

To ensure the building's long-term stability, conservation experts are carrying out a programme of repairs and improvements that balance the need to protect the building's historic character while making sure it remains safe and secure for the future.

As with any historic building, addressing problems now helps prevent more significant issues developing later.

What work is taking place?

The project includes:

  • Removal and rebuilding of the historic chimney
  • External repairs and redecoration, including restoration of cast iron gutters
  • Internal repairs and redecoration
  • Improvements to structural supports and foundations
  • Installation of a new supporting raft to strengthen the building

Every element of the work has been carefully designed to conserve the building's historic character while improving its long-term resilience.

Looking to the future

We know how much Newtown Old Town Hall means to local people, visitors and everyone who values the Island's heritage.

While our immediate priority is completing these essential conservation works, we are also thinking about the building's future and how people can once again engage with its stories and significance.

We don't yet have a date for reopening the building to visitors. The condition of historic buildings can sometimes reveal additional challenges as work progresses, and we want to ensure decisions are based on what's best for the building's long-term future.

We'll share updates on social media @ntisleofwight as the project develops.

Did you know?

Newtown Old Town Hall was saved in the 1930s with help from the mysterious Ferguson's Gang, a group of philanthropic benefactors whose fundraising efforts helped secure the building for the National Trust.

Today, almost a century later, conservation work continues to help protect this important piece of the Island's history.
