Tabitha Twitchit's Bookshop opens!

The National Trust is delighted to unveil an exciting new venture in the heart of the South Lakes: the opening of Tabitha Twitchit’s Bookshop nestled in the charming village of Hawkshead.
Opening its doors on Tuesday 12 August, this enchanting new space breathes fresh life into the former Beatrix Potter Gallery, which closed in 2022 due to environmental challenges. Now, the historic building begins a new chapter—celebrating stories, community, and the enduring legacy of Beatrix Potter.
Named after one of Potter’s beloved feline characters, Tabitha Twitchit’s Bookshop will be a treasure trove for book lovers, offering a curated selection of donated second-hand books.
Visitors can also pick up a special edition Tabitha Twitchit fundraising pin badge and embark on a brand-new ‘Beatrix Potter’s Hawkshead’ map, exploring the places she illustrated and protected in and around the village.
But this is more than just a bookshop. It’s a community hub—a place to discover other National Trust gems in the area, sign up for membership, and enjoy a rotating programme of free exhibitions and events upstairs.
From creative workshops with The Knotted Project during the October half-term to festive fun at the Hawkshead Christmas Fair, there will be something for everyone.
Get Involved! We’re currently recruiting volunteers to help bring this magical space to life. If you’d like to be part of this exciting new chapter, visit myvolunteering - National Trust to find out more and apply.
