Conservation Project to Repair Lyveden's Iconic Garden Lodge

Why we carried out vital conservation work

A stone condition survey of the Garden Lodge undertaken in 2024 identified areas of the historic building that required careful conservation. Some of the timber lintels supporting the window openings have gradually eroded over time and are no longer supporting the stonework above as effectively as they should.

This prompted a programme of essential repairs to ensure the building remains safe, stable, and well preserved for future generations.

What work took place

Specialist conservation work has now been completed by High Life Ropes Access. The team carefully repaired stonework, replaced timbers where necessary, and consolidated historic mortar.

Seasoned timber was sourced to replace beams beyond salvage, matching limestone was selected to align with the existing fabric, and mortar was carefully matched to that used in the 16th century to ensure a sensitive and consistent finish.

All work was carried out using appropriate access equipment, including scaffolding and temporary platforms where required, to protect the historic structure throughout.

Our commitment to preservation

As the culmination of Thomas Tresham’s vision for Lyveden, the Garden Lodge stands as a unique survivor of the Elizabethan age. As a Scheduled Ancient Monument, it is vital that it is carefully conserved so it can continue to be enjoyed for generations to come.

This work forms part of our ongoing commitment to preserving the Lodge’s historic fabric while ensuring it remains safe and accessible to visitors.

What this means for your visit

The Garden Lodge is now fully open to visitors. Current conservation work is complete and no construction activity is currently visible.

Visitors can once again explore the interior, enjoy the building’s remarkable architecture, and experience the peaceful landscape that surrounds it.

Please note that the lodge relies entirely on natural light, with no artificial lighting inside. Light levels may vary throughout the day and according to weather conditions.
