It’s hard not to fall in love when you catch your first glimpse of the imposing brick manor house reflected in the tranquil moat. Despite its fortified appearance, Oxburgh hall was built in 1482 as a family home by the Bedingfelds, and theirs is a story of survival. Inside, peel back the layers of history as you wander through a house filled with portraits and treasured objects. Outside, the original gardens and parkland form a mixture of formal and wilderness, from the productive kitchen garden and herbaceous border to estate walks through woodland and meadow.
Enjoy free entry all weekend (Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September) to this very special place and find out more about Oxburgh’s fascinating history on volunteer-led guided tours of the gardens, gatehouse experience and architectural history of the house (bookable on arrival). Families can also enjoy games in the garden, den building in the woods, and picnics with a view!
Plus, especially for Heritage Open Days, discover some of Oxburgh’s curious collections not usually on display as you get up close to some intriguing objects. See architectural facsimile drawings by J.C. Buckler, the architect who made many changes to Oxburgh in the 1800s, and illustrated books on architecture, including works by the famous Gothic architect A.C. Pugin. Plus take a sneak peek at part of our photography collection usually kept in storage, including old photos of the Bedingfeld family.
