The winter solstice – the shortest day of the year, usually 21 December – and the anticipation of longer days to follow since prehistoric times. Ancient sites are thought to align with the sunrise or sunset at midsummer or midwinter. This would have demonstrated the importance of seasonal changes to Neolithic people and was probably tied to agricultural cycles and spiritual beliefs. Over time, observing the winter solstice was absorbed into pagan traditions such as Yule, where Germanic and Norse ancestors honoured the sun’s return. In recent years, the winter solstice is marked more for its symbolism of renewal and the changing of the season. Modern gatherings draw Druids, Pagans and tourists alike, often focusing on nature, reflection and community.
