Spring Walks: Derwent Valley Circular from Fairholmes

A moderate circular guided walk exploring Howden Moors with stunning views of the Upper Derwent reservoirs and neo-Gothic dams.

  • Booking essential

Spring is one of the most exciting times to walk in the Peak District. While the moorland does not flower until the beginning of summer, the deep valleys begin to wake from the long winter. Bluebells, celandine and wood sorrel are some of the first flowers to bloom in the meadows and woodland, while the bleats of new-born lambs can be heard everywhere. Explore the Peak District's hidden gems with our carefully curated Spring walks programme, offering a selection of low-level walks across the Kinder, Edale & the High Peak that show off the best of springtime.

Discover the history of the Upper Derwent Reservoirs on this moderate circular walk of the Upper Derwent Valley. The first section of the walk follows the bank of Ladybower Reservoir to the sunken Derwent Village before rising onto Howden Moor with spectacular views of the reservoirs below. The walk then loops down to Upper Derwent Reservoir and back to Fairholmes.

This 5.5 mile walk is moderately challenging, includes a steep ascent, and follows an uneven footpath. Dogs on leads are welcome but there may be some stiles.
