Shaping Shugborough for the future

We're designing a sustainable future for Shugborough and opening up more access to the estate.

Since opening as a National Trust property in 2017 visitor numbers have grown rapidly, reaching over 250,000 in 2023. We anticipate these numbers to grow as we continue programmes of conservation work and open up more areas of the estate for visitors to explore and enjoy.

The next phase of our long‑term programme focuses on improving the main vehicle entrance, car parking and visitor facilities, due to open in autumn 2026. These improvements will help us welcome more people and continue caring for this significant historic landscape, its monuments and buildings.

Shaping Shugborough for the future

We're relocating the entrance, car park and Visitor Welcome to the eastern side of the estate, to conserve, protect and open up more access to Shugborough.

This will:

  • Remove vehicles and parking from one of the most historically significant parts of the parkland.
  • Improve vehicle access and parking through reopening the Lichfield Gates entrance and relocating the car park to a less historically significant part of the estate.
  • Open up more access to Shugborough through reinstating historic paths and routes.
  • Improve visitor experience with a new Visitor Welcome point, new play area and opening up more of the Walled Garden.
  • Increase grassland, urban, and woodland and forest habitats on the estate resulting in an improved natural environment (through measuring Biodiversity Net Gain).

Setting Sail

Since receiving planning approval for Shaping Shugborough; Designing for a Sustainable Future, we have been hard at work preparing our teams and the estate for this transformative project. In December 2024, our contractors, O’Brien, arrived on site and began setting up their compound on the eastern side of the estate. In 2025, the main construction phase officially got underway.

Most of the work is concentrated to the east of the estate, away from the main visitor areas. While we have worked hard to ensure minimal disruption to your visit, you may notice contractor vehicles moving across the site as they access their compound.

Relevant footpath closures are in place to ensure visitor safety in the following areas:

  • Former sports pitches
  • Lichfield Drive
  • Lichfield Drive Plantation (Bluebell Walk)

We will reopen these areas once it is safe to do so.

Any emergency closures, if necessary, will be posted on our website and social media channels.

We appreciate your patience and support during this time and hope you are as excited as we are for the future of Shugborough.
