Heroic Horses at the Hoo
Join us for some special family horse craft activities or take a ride on an Anglo-Saxon inspired hobby horse as we celebrate heroic horses of Sutton Hoo.
- Booking not needed
- Free event (admission applies)
Horses form a significant part of the Sutton Hoo story. Frank Pretty fought in the First World War and rode his horse Polly Hopkins throughout his service. Both survived the war and Polly was able to live out her retirement at Sutton Hoo.
Discovered in Mound 17 during the 1980s was the grave of a warrior and his horse. It is likely that this horse was sacrificed in the early 7th century to accompany his master to the gods.
Celebrate the horse legacy of Sutton Hoo on the weekend of 8 and 9 November where we will be running a whole host of horse-related activities.
Pop in to the old stables to make your own model Polly Hopkins or Mound 17 horse, you can also make a finger puppet horse or sketch some horse furniture and ornaments.
If the weather is good head outside the front of the stables and take a ride on one of our Anglo-Saxon-inspired hobby horses around the racing arena.
You can also try your hand at writing a heroic horse haiku or creating some horsey kennings on both days in the Discovery Room.
All activities are free with site admission.
